On the subject of the robot fencing simulator (or what ever you want to call
it...) 

perhaps a system with a gyroscope in it could be arranged so that "feels"
like you are fighting someone. The Gyro could be moved quickly to apply
force to a false foil handle... would probably be fewer tangles than the
ropes.
