all this talk of the screen greying out during intensive I/O
reminds me of the ZX81 - remember ? it used to go grey during any
massive computation like multiplying two numbers... if it was in
FAST mode, in slow mode it managed to cope with the 1/2K screen 
updating.
Haven't we come a long way since then!???
