    Do they crash for all .GIF pictures you try? Two possibilities are:

    1.  You have a corrupt .GIF file.
    2.  You have a RAM problem.

    Try HamLab. That can be made to use a disk for temporary storage,
    instead of RAM, if you happen to be short of the latter.
