  TO tell links apart from other files, how about using one of the
protection bits. So a link would look like

 Things    0     6Jan90    Link   ---lrwed
                                     ^

 Internally this would look and act like a directory, but smart
programs could tell the difference by looking at the bit fields on the file.

Just a thought.
