For people on IBM systems, there is a program in the info-mac
archives at sumex-aim.stanford.edu that will automatically debinhex a
file for downloading.  I don't recall the program's name, but it can
be found I believe in the comm or utils folder on that machine.  For
Vax people, there is a program to handle VMS, but I can't get it to
compile on my system.  Perhaps someone can tell me what I'm doing
wrong.
