The problem was that 7.0 update doesn't like the + chars in filenames (like /usr/bin/c++filt) in the CDFinfo file. Unpacking the tar file by hand worked, after which I manually created the CDF files based on the CDFinfo file (well, actually I munged it into a shell script using Emacs, of course).
