Since the three color guns are driven by analog signals, the number of colors depends on how fine the resolution from the card can be. The limitation will be from the graphics cards. simple VGA and SVGA can do from 16 to 256 colors simultaneously (depending on card and mode), out of a palatte of 262144. Many advanced graphics workstations can do 256 colors out of a palatte of 4 million, and others can do considerably more.
