Make sure that you try the public domain application "Image v.1.33" by Wayne Rasband. It is a powerful, script- controllable image capture and analysis application that is being used successfully by researchers for tasks ranging from image enhancement to quantitative metallography. For my application, Image out-performed a dedicated 64-grey level Quantimet, offering greater ease-of-use at 256-grey level resolution. Better still, the source code has also been placed in the public domain. The Image 1.33g application and documentation can be found in the sumex archives (IP# - 36.44.0.6) in the /info-mac/app directory. Pointers to an ftp site for the source code and additional info can be found in the Image manual. -- Bill (johnston@oscar.ccm.udel.edu)
