Try using Scsi Probe 2.01 a CDEV. This will allow scanning of 
all scsi drives, and mounting of drives powered up after the Mac
is turned on.  I don't know if this will help your problem at all, 
but it is handy to have.It's avaliable on AOL.   You could also
try putting you internal into your external case, that would tell
if you have cable or powersupply problems.
