If you do not have expert mode set in Preferences and you are in the file 
viewer and you type .xyz (assuming .xyz exists), the file view will 
change to the "expert mode" and will show all dot files and certain 
directories which are otherwise suppressed (e.g., bin, dev). My question is:
is there anyway to restore the "non-expert" mode short of logging off and on?
