Simply make a link between /usr/lib/X11/X11/app-defaults and /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults (i.e., ln -s /usr/lib/X11/X11/app-defaults /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults). For some reason, even though the makefile says to look at /usr/lib/X11/X11/app-defaults and my XAPPLRESDIR environment variable points to /usr/lib/X11/X11/app-defaults, xman still looks in /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults for its application defaults :-/.
