[[ long description of agonizing problems ]] We had a great deal of trouble with stock DEC bind as well, filing serveral SPRs and getting told "fixed in next release". Get the bind from gatekeeper.dec.com in ~ftp/pub/DEC/cra-bind.Z. This is what we use on our large nameserver at ITI (tho not 85+ domains!). The documentation included in it implies that DEC uses this bind for their IP gateways and name servers rather than what comes with 3.X or 4.X.
