CCITT V.42 _is_ the international standard for modem error control! A Hayes V-series Smartmodem 9600 V.42 will connect in error-control mode with Bell 212, V.22, or V.22bis modulation with any other similarly-equipmented modem (V.42 or MNP4). It won't connect at 9600 with any but another Hayes V-series 9600 modem. The ULTRA 96 _will_ connect at 9600 with V.42 error control with modems from other manufacturers using V.32 modulation. > If anyone needs one for use on a leased line or > in a synchronous environment, please let me know! When you first posted your message to this regard, I tried to reply to you but the message got rejected somewhere along the way -- so I'm posting this reply on the net. If your Smartmodem 9600 is "brand new", please contact Barbara Miller, manager of customer service at Hayes (404-449-8791), to see about arranging a trade for an Ultra 96. > Did I get this pretty right, Tony? Want to buy a SmartModem V.32 :-) Yes, you got it real close, except as I noted above. I must also point out that it is possible to upgrade an original V-series Smartmodem 9600 to V.42bis capability with a simple ROM upgrade; all you have to do is call Hayes Technical Support to arrange it (404-441-1617). It can't be upgraded to V.32 modulation, however. -- Toby -- Toby Nixon, Principal Engineer | Voice +1-404-449-8791 Telex 151243420 Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc. | Fax +1-404-447-0178 CIS 70271,404 P.O.
