Thanks to all of you that responded.  What I have is the Hayes Smartmodem
Series 9600 V.42, which will only talk to other Hayes Modems above 2400bps.
The reason I got "NO CARRIER" is that I had the register set that says ONLY
connect at the DTE line speed.  ( Set this trying to force a connection >
2400bps).
