Much UUCP traffic is already compressed (ie compressed, batched news transmissions). Attempting to recompress a byte stream that is already compressed will usually INCREASE the total size of the stream, thus decreasing throughput. If you use uucp to download sources from archive sites such as uunet, that stuff is generally compressed as well.
