   You're right, of course, but Jason's message needs translation:

What Jason Said                 What Jason Meant

"V.42 is ... not a standard"    V.42 does not define a modulation protocol

"The Hayes 9600 V.42 can not    Hayes' V-9600 will only speak at 9600+ bps
talk to other V.42 modems"      with other Hayes V-9600 modems

   I hate it when incorrect or sloppy terminology results in misleading posts, 
but I'm not above making mistakes of my own...
