I am participating in an effort to define and adopt software Standards for use
within my company, Shell Oil Co. Our initial effort is to adopt ANSI C
as our standard.

Part of a Standard in our process is a plan to define to anyone coming
along later how to go about getting training in the technology represented by
the Standard. We have decided that training for C should fall into three
primary (not totally mutually exclusive) areas:

  1. Self study - this consists of individually initiated study, probably
     mostly reading, with possible other media, too. It may or may not
     include access to a computer and practice, but any such effort would be 
     at the discretion of the individual.

  2. Programmed instruction - typically is individual study that uses some
     form of interactive tool, and has a well defined lesson plan. It may
     be computer based, video, audio, texts, etc, but is designed to present
     a concept and then require the individual access a computer to do 
     exercises. Typically there is no instructor involved.

  3. Formal classroom training.

I am looking for your experience and recommendations for good texts (or other
media) for Self Study. Yes, I know I can go down to the bookstore and there
are shelves of C books. But which are the good ones and which should be
avoided?

I am also looking for experience in the Programmed Instruction products
that might be available.
