On a HP LJ III with Postscript cartridge, psroff generates this
at the beginning:

 /GlobalSave save def
 /hits 0 def /misses 0 def
 /resolution 432 def
 statusdict /jobname (lew@gsgspar Mon Jan  7 11:50:49 1991 troff2ps R2 P6) def
 (lew@gsgspar Mon Jan  7 11:50:49 1991 troff2ps R2 P6\n) print
 flush
 usertime /btime exch def

 And the printer spits back:

	%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: lew@gsgspar ]%%
	%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%

Is this a cartridge bug?  The same stuff works on other printers...
I didn't think that @ had a special meaning.
