Several people suggested that I use either lzexe (Freeware) or PKlite (shareware). One kind soul actually sent me a copy of lzexe and it seems to work great. My 400k or so .exe file shrank to 170k. And yes, the compressed file does seem to load and run about as fast as the original. With the original, the disk spins for about 3 secs and the program comes up. With the compressed version, the disk spins for about 1 sec, the program decompresses for about 2 secs and then the program comes up. As several people pointed out, it doesn't work with overlaid programs. That is not a problem in my case.
