I would suggest running your copy of DeluxePaint through COMPACT and EXPRESS,
two APW utilties that will make your life wonderful.  After I did that,
DeluxePaint load time went from 50 seconds to 8 seconds (off of floppy!).
It also worked- i.e., it had crashed under 5.0.3 when I ran it, but after
I COMPACT/EXPRESSED it, it worked great.
