+Buy a few ARCNET boards -- they're only $65 quantity one, and they're 
+supported by Little Big Lan -- the successor to the $25 Network ("the
+$75 Network").

Thanks for the suggestion, but one of the machines to be networked is a
laptop with no slots.  Thus the requirement that this thing work over
parallel ports.
