I managed to get the job done myself and ended up with a neat little package for creating and handling canvases that are to display images. With any luck I will never have to deal directly with it again. So far its done everything I want. If anyone wants a copy of it email a request and I'll send it to you. Associated with the package is a set of macros, typedefs, and functions that allow one to create static and dynamic 2d arrays that provide some nice capabilities for scientific programming.
