I actually solved the problem somewhat before the responses started coming in, but I appreciate them all the same. What I did was to have the .xsession file source my .login file and then run .xinitrc under $SHELL. What I would have liked is a version of exec with an option to run its argument modified to be a 'login' shell. Alas. Thanks again. -- Douglas S.
