Steve, I know of two sources you might check for tthe equipment you
mentioned for hearing both a tape recorder playback and a speech
synth at the same time.

PC Partners has a device that sells for $85 that is suppose to
handle that type of situation. Their phone number is (301)
744-3724.

Mr. Greg Mark at St. Louis also sells a device called "The Speech
Enhancer" which does an excellent job of providing just what youare
asking for with a volume control provided also on the unit. The
Cost of this unit is $40.  I have used this device a lot in the
past and am buying several for our computer training program.  I do
not have the number handy, but I am sure you can get it from
information at St. Louis Missouri area code 314.  Ok, here is his
