Hi steve, i also use headphones to listen to my speech synthesizer and 
cassette player at the same time.  i didn't have to buy anything 
expensive or fancy.  i went to radio shack and bought a standard y 
connection then i plugged the headphones into the leg of the y and then 
ran  cables from the speech synthesizer and from the cassette player 
to the y connecter.  out of the left ear i can hear 1 and out of the 
right ear i can hear the other.  if i will be listening to only 1 for a 
great length of time i can disconnect and make it steereo.  good luck,
