Under the constraints you have imposed, with an added constraint (one we
believe in very strongly) that the solution be portable... there is none.

The correct solution is that "useful" extensions made to an OS should not
break existing programs.  That means, in particular, that a user fiddling
with new knobs and switches should not be able to screw up privileged
applications without their consent.
