Most of the time this is setup to a ludicrously low value e.g. 2048 == 1 Megabyte. As far as I can see, anybody that has the wherewithal to bring up a news system on the system ought to be able to make the minute changes necessary to nuke this cretinism in SysV - it's damn near impossible to set ulimit to a value which will save you from trouble but not get in the way, so the best thing is to (effectively) disable it.
