I now have an answer to the buffer record problem, thanks to ian@unipalm!
The clock has to be running for Notator to calculate timing values, and
YOU have to set it running (simply hitting the START button works fine).

While checking this out, I also realized that the weird vertical line is
just a poor screen redraw after getting rid of the initial notepad screen.
Using the STOP button causes it to redraw correctly. Only the CONT button
seems to be permanently damaged (the N is not drawn correctly, but it
works OK).
