HELP!

My son (age 4) enjoys Maniac Mansion, but is stuck.

We can't figure out:
 How to get the man-eating plant to grow up so we can get through the hatch.
 How to open the door to the lab (we have the glowing key - need # for keypad)
 How to get the key from the nurse (tried letting her catch someone, but she
	gets back in time to catch the second person as well)
 How to open the safe in the attic above the nurse's room.
 We fixed the wires in the attic, what will that do? (can't seem to get the
	video games to work, thought they appear to work for professor...)
