From the mail I've received, there are two other bottles that are needed out of this area: one cures you if you have been haunted by the spirit (the puzzle that Dan mentions), the other makes you very light, allowing you to go places you might otherwise not be able to go. I played the Mac version of Shadowgate, which allows you to bypass the need for this lightness potion, but apparently the Nintendo version is not so forgiving.
