does UNIXMODE (or should i say UnIxMoDe :-) actually cause things in disk
FATs to be case sensitive? if so, that is something to look into. otherwise,
it probably keeps a conversion table around which is a definite, tho
perhaps robust, kludge. as i recall unixmode supports links, so it is
probably the table variety, which could get hairy with 1000's of files...
