This might have been brought up in this forum before:

Having taken 18.55 up on a HP/Apollo 400 with HP-UX 7.03 and linking with vanilla
X11 release 4 libraries, I find that Emacs consequently fails to update window
contents upon raise or deiconify.  Anyone for a simple solution to this one?

I am neither familiar with X nor Emacs interior.
