As a software person you obvious do not need to know about hardware. :-) The switches are used with various hardware accessories such as the 80287 coprocessor. If you buy them you should get documentation on what the switch settings should be. If you insist on knowing more :-), you can buy the hardware technical reference manual (5061-8982) which will explain down to pin level what the switches do. I do not know the meaning of life but I do know the answer is 42.
