If I receive significant response I use two with regularity: PKZIP: Superior speed and compression of ASCII text LHARC: Superior compression of mixed and BINARY files ....and, about a month ago, the introduction of ARJ, a new and even more efficient compression utility, came down the pike. ARJ not only offers ASCII and BINARY compression superior to either of the above, it's also (generally) faster than PKZIP. If I had to stick with one, it would be ARJ. If that wasn't available, I'd use one of the other two listed above; the choice would depend upon which type of file was normally being archived.
