I've been using ``The $25 Network'' available from

for $25.

It is a reasonably "full featured" LAN which uses standard serial
ports at about 115kbaud.  This is slower than the Ethernet I have at
work, but lots faster than Kermit.  I've used it for about six months
on two different laptops with DOS 3.2 and DOS 4.0 and been very happy.
