There are a lot of programs that usefully work in the background apart from downloading files. Compaction programs work (good). Excel re-calculates (not often necessary) Printers print (necessary). I write simulations for my Ph.D that run in the background, and auto-start after a reboot. It's no problem. Not to mention the host of clocks, load average plotters, etc. that are just plain fun
