There's one thing you might check. Mail under 2.0 has a preference (under "Expert") that lets you specify what spool directory you want to read your mail from. It's possible that this preference got changed by a curious user who did not realize its implications. The value of this preference should be "/usr/spool/mail" in your scenario. Hope that helps.
