Is it possible to have symbols in \TeX? I would  like to have a
file I can \input with certain `fields' that can be replaced. I
was looking for something like `ifdef \FIELD1' so that if the
FIELD1 macro were not defined it could be assigned a default
value, and ignored otherwise. Any ideas???
