On page 97 of the January 1991 issue of Unix World Magazine
is an article entitled "Tools for Flexible Interface
Design," which discusses "Empress," a database and 4GL which
supports Binary Large OBjectS (BLOBS).

One of the standard applications for BLOBS is for pictorial
databases. 

Empress is available for SCO Unix and Xenix.

The Faircom Toolbox (discussed in the same article) could be
modified to support BLOBs also, if you don't mind doing a
lot of low-level C work.
