SOunds like you forgot the k option in tar. You can also use the bundle
package (multivolume to stdout) to read the stuff in and get better
performance, too.

a) tar xfk /dev/rfd1135ds18 1440
b) unbundle /dev/rfd1135ds18 1440k 18k | tar xf -
