 I dont have comprehensive references but I think you can probably find a good
 group of references in the book by S.M. Sze "The physics of Semiconductor 
 Devices" Wiley, 1981. I believe the LED was invented by Nick Holonyak of 
 the University of Illinois in Urbana. The above book has very little historical content, however.
