Note there are many 286 machines "out there" too, so it is not a 386-only issue. My machine is a 286 beast and I would enjoy having 16 Megs of RAM with 32Megs swap. (Oh yes, swapping would be a pain, but it could be done if one thinks a bit.) Until I find a money tree (or rich uncle), my 286 will have to do.
