How about some nice external fax modems, that run over nice standard serial lines, that aren't so entirely incompatible with each different type of computer that you might want to plug it in to. Then you don't need a kernel device driver, just use the tty driver and some user software. I understand that Fujitsu makes an external FaxModem, is it the DeX?
