Larry, we really need setjmp/longjmp. Otherwise, how can I
interrupt reads with alarms? On 4.2 BSD systems, reads are
automatically restarted.

My incredibly ugly kluge around this is to TIOCSTI
a special "timeout character" into the input stream.
