Has anyone developed a homegrown substitute for the Panasonic
1180/1191 serial interface option (which I believe also fits
their 24 pin printers)?  $79 is a lot of money for what I 
believe to be a very simple circuit, judging from the fact
that $60 is charged for a $6 32Kx8 static ram chip in 
the buffer expansion option.
