The layers.library is based on a paper by Rob Pike of Bell Labs titled "Graphics in Overlapping Bitmap Layers" published in ACM Transactions on Graphics, Vol. 2, No. 2, April 1983, Pages 135-160; and possibly Computer Graphics (SigGraph) as well.
