I suggested MOVING the files, not COPYING them. Using the Finder, this is a trivial operation that doesn't take very long even for dozens of files. The time you have to take to specify the desired ordering when you restore the files to the original directory will be similar no matter what approach you use. I've actually done this myself; it really is not very much of a hassle.
