Some weeks ago somebody posted that there was a problem with rexecd (/usr/etc/rexecd) on Ultrix 4.0! We have Ultrix 4.0 (rev179) installed a didn't succeed in getting MacX working (stream came up halfway.... was the errormessage on the Mac-side). The solution was posted to remove the new (4.0) rexecd with an older one, for example from Ultrix 3.1. I did it and MacX worked fine. So did some other application which use rexecd! BUT !!!!! There is a dangerous trap in this solution! If you use MacX and start an 'xterm' on an Ultrix machine you suddenly have group-ID 0 (this is the systemgroup!!!!) Now you are able to write to /etc for example! This should (must) not happen!!! A college of mine phoned with DEC-Fieldservice (here in Germany/Frank- furt a.M.) and they sent (quiet fast!) a patch! This version is o.k.. When I log in now, i have gid=15 (users) which is the correct one! Good luck with other Ultrix-Problems!!! P.
