This is always a source of trouble, BAD cables can be a very hard problem to track down. Make sure they are on tight. Secondly, are you able to do a low-level format of the drive? If so you may have a problem reading the first section of the drive. Fdisk may not work properly. Try using disk-manager to set up a partition, then go in to fdisk and see if you can read the disk.
