Hmmm.  Sounds like how I spent last weekend, only with slightly different
players -- 1stAidHFS in the new 911 Utilities package and the Norton utilities.

To make a VERY long story short, the most likely fix is to dump the disk to
tape or floppies (50 in my case), reformat the HD (which is NOT done by the
menu Initialize command, but rather by the Install HD Utility) and restore
from your backup.

I tried several less drastic things, involving utilities from lots of vendors,
including Apple.  You can save time by doing the reformat now, instead of
putting it off for many hours first :-(
